What is Juvederm?

JUVÉDERM® XC is a smooth gel filler used to instantly smooth away wrinkles around the mouth and nose. It is manufactured using HYLACROSS™ technology, creating a smooth-consistency gel, and is infused with lidocaine to improve comfort during your treatment.

Types of Juvéderm Treatments

Because one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to wrinkle treatment, there are different types of Juvéderm treatments depending on your unique anatomy and goals:

Practitioner injecting Juvederm into cheek for facial contouring and volume restoration
Juvederm restores facial volume and smooths lines.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Juvéderm?

This treatment is ideal for people whose skin has lost structure and volume due to aging, sunlight, and the natural reduction of HA. Candidates typically want to treat:

Different facial areas requiring contouring or volumizing, as there are various formulations available (like JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Voluma, and Volbella) that can be tailored to a patient’s unique anatomy and goals.

When Will You See Results and How Long Do They Last?

Results vary based on how each individual’s body metabolizes the injections, but Juvéderm typically lasts for a period of 9 months to one year. However, certain areas of the face that experience more movement, such as the lips, will see faster volume depletion

Smooth Lines and Restore Volume With Juvéderm

Understanding Bruising and Side Effects

Post-Treatment Care and Recovery

There is minimal downtime, and most patients are able to resume daily activities or return to work on the exact same day of the treatment. It is recommended to avoid exercise (other than walking) for 24 hours following the procedure. Dr. Schrader can also provide cool compresses to apply to the treated areas at home if necessary.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

The treatment is nonsurgical and physician-administered. During the visit, if it is your first time, Dr. Schrader will discuss your medical history before starting. She will then apply a lidocaine numbing cream to ensure maximum comfort. Using a fine needle, the JUVÉDERM® XC gel is eased under the skin to fill the soft tissue of the dermis, adding volume instantly.

What Makes Juvéderm Different?

While other hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers on the market have a more granular consistency, Juvéderm is uniquely formulated as the first smooth-consistency HA gel. This is achieved through an innovative manufacturing process called HYLACROSS™ technology, which creates an optimal gel structure that holds up over time. Additionally, it stands out as the #1 selling dermal filler in the U.S., and specific formulations like Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC already have Xylocaine (an anesthetic) mixed into the filler.

Juvederm Frequently Asked Questions

Results vary by person based on how the body metabolizes the injections, but Juvederm typically lasts for a period of 9 months to one year. The manufactures note that the HA products may last 6-12 months.  However, certain areas of the face, such as the lips will have faster volume depletion due to their movement.  Each person is an individual, so predicting precise longevity is difficult.

While other HA fillers on the market have a more granular consistency, Juvéderm injectable gel is the first smooth-consistency HA gel. It’s innovative manufacturing process gives Juvéderm its unique smooth-gel properties as well as an optimal gel structure that holds up over time. That’s why Juvéderm injectable gel is the only HA filler that’s FDA approved to last up to 1 year. In addition,  Juvéderm Ultra XC and Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC have Xylocaine mixed in the filler.

If you usually bruise with injections, there may be bruising with Juvéderm injectable gel. If you take apirin or ibuprofen every day, or if you supplement with omega 3’s, fish oil, or garlic every day, you should consider stopping those a few days before your appointment. If you do have bruising, it is fine to use cover-up makeup to hide it and it should completely resolve within a few days to a couple of weeks. If there is bruising, it does not diminish the effect of the Juvéderm injectable gel.

The Juvederm procedure is very fast, and the actual injections generally take around 30 minutes. If this is your first visit with Dr. Schrader, you will need to allow for additional time before the injections are administered to discuss your medical history. Dr. Schrader will apply a lidocaine numbing cream to make the application more comfortable, and will have cool compresses for you to take home and apply to the treated areas if necessary.

Most of Dr. Schrader’s patients are able to resume daily activities or return to work the day of treatment as there will be minimal swelling. In order to prevent a greater degree of swelling and bruising, it is advisable to avoid aspirin or ibuprofen containing products for a few days. It is also a good idea to avoid exercise other than walking for 24 hours following treatment.
